That was the question listeners to my breakfast show were asked after last week’s regrettable but predictable ruling by the Supreme Court. They left the Prime Minister packing less punch than a freshly neutered tabby. The Establishment will stop at nothing, and I mean absolutely bloody nothing, to prevent Brexit. Your Leave vote is worth as much as a losing lottery ticket. The wishes of the electorate count for nothing as those inside the Westminster bubble know so much better than you. It seems the only person trying to do what the public requested is Boris Johnson and, as a result of respecting that mandate, he finds himself blocked and thwarted at every turn, and has had to endure global humiliation from that panel of judges, none of whom is a name outside of their own home. Seeing as some of the questioning at the Supreme Court was as impartial as a “scrote” being grilled by DI Jack Regan in The Sweeney, the fact the ruling went against the Government was not a major surprise. However, some of their justification certainly was. The Court rested much of its ruling on the Case of Proclamations from 1610. It was passed to stop a monarch changing the law simply because he chose to. But it was overtaken in 1689 by a Bill of Rights that declared proceedings in Parliament “ought not be impeached or questioned in any court.” For more than 300 years it remained unchanged and unchallenged, until last week’s ruling – which must also call into question the Supreme Court’s standing alongside the monarch. The Queen authorised the suspension but was overruled by the judges. So does that now mean it is they who are sovereign? Look forward to Lady Hale’s picture appearing on stamps any day soon. The nation finds itself stuck in a seemingly endless Groundhog Day with a PM being denied a General Election to clear the backlog. Boris Johnson is a huge fan of Winston Churchill, who memorably said: “Give us the tools and we will finish the job.” He doesn’t need “the tools”, the Prime Minister just needs a level playing field. How can they continue to deny him one?camera iphone 8 plus apk Nick Ferrari: All Hale the new Queen of England | |
