THE mother of a baby left brain-damaged by a babysitter has revealed she still blames herself for the nightmare. Sophie Reed and her partner Luke Taylor left five-month-old Bayleigh-Lee with long-time family friend Stephen Smith for just a couple of hours while they went night fishing. When they got home, Bayleigh app-eared to be sleeping soundly. But minutes later the baby let out a terrible, heart-stopping moan. When Sophie dashed into the living room she found her daughter limp, lifeless and grey. It later emerged Smith had shaken the tiny tot so violently she had suffered catastrophic brain injuries. He denied hurting Bayleigh, but after a week-long trial in July he was found guilty of GBH with intent and was caged for 10 years. Now three-and-a-half, Bayleigh is almost totally blind and has cerebral palsy, epilepsy, delayed development and mobility issues. Sophie, 27, said: “Bayleigh’s such an amazing, strong little girl. Sometimes I feel so sad about the life she could have had. “I can’t help but blame myself. What if we hadn’t gone out that night? What if we’d asked someone else to watch her? I know the only person to blame is Stephen, but I can’t help but feel guilty.” Sophie, who also has six-month-old Brody-Lee with Luke, is now Bayleigh’s full-time carer. The toddler needs intensive one-to-one care with regular physio and medication and will need to attend a special school. But Sophie and Luke, 29, are just grateful their little girl is alive following the horrific attack in August 2016. Sophie said: “They told us they didn’t think Bayleigh would make it. “We all said our goodbyes. It was the worst time of my life. The doctor told us Bayleigh’s injuries were caused by shaken baby syndrome. “We couldn’t get our heads around the fact that this had been done on purpose. “She was perfectly fine when we went out, so we knew it could only have been Stephen.” It was at that stage the police became involved – questioning Smith but also putting Sophie and Luke under suspicion. They were banned from seeing Bayleigh alone and after four weeks in hospital she was put into the care of social services. Bayleigh stayed with a foster family as Sophie and Luke prepared to go to family court to fight for their little girl. Sophie, of Haverfordwest, Pem-brokes, said: “We were treated like criminals. Not being there for Bayleigh when she needed me most was heartbreaking.” In October 2016, a family court cleared Sophie and Luke of any wrongdoing. But it wasn’t until May 2017 that Bayleigh was finally allowed to go home. That left Smith, 28, as the only suspect, but the police told them that there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute him. Sophie and Luke appealed three times against the decision and it was in April – nearly a year after their first appeal – that Smith was arrested and charged. Sophie said: “It was a huge relief when Stephen was jailed, but he has ruined our lives and I hate him for everything he’s done to Baylei
