The Plymouth City Council approved a policy for body cameras worn by the city’s police officers.
According to the policy, Plymouth officers must activate their body cameras during many situations, including when they are involved in a vehicle pursuit, an arrest and the use of force.
The goal of a body camera is to help capture evidence and add a higher level of transparency. According to Plymouth city officials, false reports involving police go down about 90 percent when body cameras are in place.
Plymouth Public Safety Director Mike Goldstein says there will be a learning curve with the cameras. That includes remembering to turn them on.
The city’s police force responds to roughly 55,000 events a year. The cameras are expected to be put into use later this year.
Other local cities that have deployed body cameras include Crystal, Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center and Golden Valley.
