All HealthPartners and Park Nicollet clinics started writing prescriptions for fruits and vegetables for their young patients. Anytime a child comes in for a wellness checkup, they can get $10 to buy produce at Cub Foods.
The “Power of Fruits and Veggies program” has been in place now for more than five years.
The goal is to reach 20,000 families this summer.
“Unhealthy food choices leads to different diseases including diabetes, obesity, that can have all sorts of impacts on overall health and emotional well-being,” said Dr. Larry Richmond from Park Nicollet in Plymouth. “The decisions we make everyday, including exercise and healthy food choices like fruits and veggies, are much more important than frankly anything I can prescribe.”
According to doctors, the more color on a kids plate the better.
Different colors represent vitamins, which is critical to good
nutrition.
