חוקרים בטכניון פיתחו גישה חדשה לייצור מימן ממים באמצעות אנרגיה סולרית. במאמר המתפרסם בכתב העת Nature Materials מסבירים החוקרים כי גישה זו תאפשר להפיק את המימן במרוכז בנקודת המכירה - למשל בתחנת תדלוק של רכב חשמלי המונע במימן - גם אם היא רחוקה מהחווה הסולרית. הטכנולוגיה החדשה צפויה להפחית משמעותית את עלויות ייצור המימן והובלתו ללקוח.
את המחקר הובילו אביגיל לנדמן, דוקטורנטית בתכנית האנרגיה ע"ש גרנד בטכניון (GTEP), וד"ר חן דותן מהמעבדה לחומרים והתקנים אלקטרוכימיים. אביגיל עובדת על הדוקטורט בהנחיית פרופ' אבנר רוטשילד מהפקולטה למדע והנדסה של חומרים ופרופ' גדעון גרדר, דיקן הפקולטה להנדסה כימית. המחקר נתמך על ידי מרכז המצוינות (I-CORE) למחקר בדלקים סולריים (המתוקצב על ידי ות"ת), משרד התשתיות הלאומיות, האנרגיה והמים, המיזם האירופי המשותף לתאי דלק ומימן (FCH-JU), תכנית האנרגיה ע"ש גרנד בטכניון (GTEP) , התורם אד סאטל וקרן אדליס.

Technion-Israel Institute of Technology researchers have developed a new approach to the production of hydrogen from water using solar energy. In findings published in Nature Materials, the researchers explain how this approach will make it possible to produce hydrogen in a centralized manner at the point of sale (for example, at a gas station for electric cars fueled by hydrogen) located far from the solar farm. The new technology is expected to significantly reduce the cost of producing the hydrogen and shipping it to the customer.

The study was led by Avigail Landman, a doctoral student in the Nancy & Stephen Grand Technion Energy Program (GTEP), and Dr. Hen Dotan from the Electrochemical Materials & Devices Lab. Ms. Landman is working on her doctorate under the guidance of Prof. Avner Rothschild from the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering, and Prof. Gideon Grader, Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering.
