A heartbroken mum has spoken of how she thought her “football-mad” nine-year-old son seemed to have a simple cold, but died just days later. Josh Harber, from Temple Ewell in Dover, was “absolutely fine” the week before he died, his mum Danielle said. “He was playing football in a football match and he was absolutely fine,” she told Kent Live. “Then during that week he literally just had cold symptoms,” she added. “He had a bit of a temperature, he was sick once but his brother had a sick bug the week before, so I just put it down to that,” she said. Josh, who would have started Year 5 at school this September, suddenly deteriorated and was rushed to A&E at William Harvery Hospital in Ashford on July 7. A blood test revealed that Josh’s white cell count was alarmingly high and he was transferred to St George's Hospital in London to start chemotherapy for a rare form of leukaemia. Tragically, the lad died just two days later. His devastated mum and dad were with him at his bedside in hospital when he passed away and they played his favourite Ed Sheeran album. Josh had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) which is a type of blood cancer. Danielle said: “He was a very energetic, caring, loving boy, who was always concerned for how everybody else was feeling. “He always put other people first, all the time. “He was very sporty, football-mad. He played for Dover Rangers and he was just an absolute angel really.” Josh also had a younger brother, Jack, eight, and an older brother Lewis, 14. Daniel said: “Josh was the middle one, he was like the jam in the sandwich. “He’d spend time with his younger brother doing LEGO and Minecraft and then he’d play football for hours with the eldest one, Lewis. “So, the home dynamics have just completely changed. “The summer was tough because obviously we were still in shock for quite a long time.” “With my youngest it was just a case of trying to keep him busy because he’d lost his playmate,” she added. The family are now raising money to help children with leukaemia through Josh’s Gold Star Fund.
