A mum had to have her feet amputated after a shocking case of "winter flu" turned out to be sepsis. Ruth Kent had dismissed her telling symptoms as a simple case of flu until she woke one night to find she had wet herself. The 53-year-old rushed to the bathroom but noticed a sharp pain in her feet as she started up the stairs. Thinking nothing of it, Ruth carried on as normal until her condition declined the next day and she was rushed to Northampton General Hospital where she was treated for meningitis. Shockingly, doctors soon discovered the infection had rapidly turned to sepsis and her face, feet, hands turned to black as her organs shut down. Over the next few months Ruth fought for her life as the deadly blood poisoning began to take over her body. Ruth said: "I deteriorated very, very quickly. It was really scary. "My son saved my life that day. If he hadn't have been there, I would have been a goner. "I had no inclination that it was sepsis. If I'd have known more I might have gone to the doctors earlier. "It was just normal cold symptoms at the beginning - like shivering or aching. I didn't have a headache or anything like that." Ruth has suffered with a poor immune system since she was a child and has admitted she thought nothing of the symptoms as she is used to being "floored by colds." But she began to take things more seriously when she lost control of her bowls and her son discovered her blue on the sofa. She said: "On the third day I rang into work sick and had to stay in bed all day. "That night I woke up and I had messed myself in bed. When I went to stand up, I noticed my feet were absolutely killing me. "When I went downstairs to the bathroom, I didn't turn the lights on so I didn't notice anything was wrong. "My partner woke up at 6am the following day and brought me a cup of tea - then the same thing happened. It went straight through me again. It wasn't nice. "I thought 'this is some kind of bug' I needed to call the doctors. "My feet were killing and I felt like my legs were going to go so I lay on the sofa. "My son got up at 9am and he found me on the sofa. I had gone blue. "My body was shutting down and he rang an ambulance. I remember him screaming. "Within five minutes an ambulance was there. I was saying I just want to go to sleep - please let me sleep." At the hospital, doctors took Ruth's family aside and told them she was the poorliest person in the hospital. She said: "They told them to prepare themselves. I can't imagine how that must have been for them - it still upsets me now. "I don't remember much but I was in intensive care for about two weeks. "I was very confused and my hands, feet and face had gone black. They thought I would lose my nose." Ruth fought through the worst but felt distressed as she watched a nurse "scraping" the black tissue from her nose and feet – caused by septicaemia that had set in. She said: "One of the nurses in intensive care started putting cream on my nose. She was scraping it
